As a huge RPG player and a tarot deck collector, The Ultimate RPG Tarot Deck does a great job of bridging RPGs and tarot, I can definitely see DMs using this as a tool to enhance gameplay and players drawing inspiration from the cards. The deck’s tongue-in-cheek illustrations and detailed guidebook offer endless possibilities, encouraging deeper character development and plot intricacies.
As DMs, storytelling is crucial in your game, with plot hooks playing an essential role in engaging players. Each card represents an RPG archetype with illustrations that captivate players and invite exploration of new storytelling possibilities. It also provides hooks that create direction and urgency, injecting excitement and unpredictability into the game, I feel like it’s easy enough to integrate into different systems and gaming worlds.
The guidebook that comes with the deck is small but sufficient. It has a section for tarot reading and also a section for using this deck for RPG gameplay. Some interesting mechanics include using it for random encounter, NPC generation or determining results. I would have loved it more if it comes with a short module, but the guidebook works for what it is.
The deck’s card stock is sturdy, feels good when you shuffle it. However, I’m not a fan of white borders/frames for tarot cards. As much as you should try to keep your hands clean while using a tarot deck, accidents will happen and I can definitely see the borders getting dirty or yellowed.
For its price point, the Ultimate RPG Tarot Deck is definitely a good deal. It is a powerful catalyst for creativity in RPGs that it opens up new dimensions of storytelling. For tarot readers, the deck is a great addition to your collection, especially if you’re a fan of RPGs.
