Christina Ricci, the OG Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family, and the star of Yellowjackets has just released a tarot deck, Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook. Known for her gothic charm, I can’t say I’m surprised that she has embarked on this new creative journey.
Despite her association with dark, mystical roles, Ricci is quick to dispel misconceptions about tarot. “I don’t really believe in anything mystical—I think all of the magic we need in the world takes place right in our brain,” Ricci explained in a recent interview. For her, tarot is not about predicting the future through supernatural means but a tool for self-awareness. “Tarot harnesses your self-consciousness and self-awareness, helping you reflect on your life, choices, and identity,” she said.
The deck, created with tarot expert Minerva Siegel and illustrated by Felipe Flores, dives deep into the themes of the subconscious mind. Each of the 78 cards in the deck reflects aspects of Ricci’s personal journey, interpreted through her unique perspective and the stunning artistry of Flores.
Ricci’s connection to Cat Full of Spiders runs deep. The deck was conceived in collaboration with her husband, Mark Hampton, who served as its creative director. “The original idea was my husband’s,” Ricci shared. “We wanted to create something deeply personal, conveying messages about how I see the world and life’s magic.”
The name itself, Cat Full of Spiders, carries a metaphorical weight. Ricci described it as a symbol for the accumulation of life’s experiences—both the joyful and the traumatic. “The spiders represent all the moments that shape you, influence your choices, and create your future,” she explained.
Unlike many tarot decks tied to pop culture, Ricci’s deck isn’t a tribute to her filmography, though fans might recognize subtle nods. For example, the cards feature characters that evoke elements of Ricci’s roles, blending her iconic portrayals with her personal identity. The “Star” card channels her glamorous portrayal of Zelda Fitzgerald, while the “Knight of Cups” carries hints of her signature dark curls reminiscent of Wednesday Addams.
Yet the deck’s purpose transcends homage. “This is about me as an individual, not me as an actress,” Ricci noted. “It’s a celebration of identity, individuality, and the fascinating complexity of every person.”
Beyond its primary function as a tarot deck, Cat Full of Spiders feels like the beginning of something larger. Ricci teased the possibility of expanding its richly imagined world, hinting at a future screenplay or deeper exploration of the characters and stories depicted in the cards.
“This project ticks all the boxes for the kind of things I want to create—works that celebrate identity and delve into the stories behind the surface,” Ricci shared.
Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook is now available online and in stores.
